Bulleted and Numbered Lists

the Paragraph Inspector

You can layout bulleted and numbered lists by using a combination of tab stops and paragraph indent settings, which are adjustable via the Paragraph Inspector (shown right).

Here are the main features of tab stops:

All paragraphs have a default tab stop spacing of half an inch (12.7 mm).

You can adjust the tab stop spacing for each paragraph independently, via the "Tab Stops (every)" control.

Here are the main features of paragraph Indents:

Indent settings are used to apply an inset distance.

First Indent applies to the first line of a paragraph only.

Left Indent applies to the second and subsequent lines of a paragraph*.

Right Indent applies to all lines*.

* This is the case for languages that read from left-to-right - iStudio Publisher does not at present include support for right-to-left languages.

To format the layout of a bulleted or numbered list:

Example of a bulleted list

For list main items, start by inserting a bullet/number character.

Enter a Tab character, by pressing the Tab key (⇥).

Enter the bullet text.

Set the Left Indent to match the Tab Stops (every) setting, so that the second line starts underneath the first.

Position the bullet character by adjusting the First Indent, setting it to a value of approximately one half of a tab stop width.

You can increase the bullet character size by increasing its font size. If you do this, set the Line Spacing mode to Scaled to keep the same paragraph line spacing.

You can insert checkboxes as characters and align them by inserting extra tabs.

For list sub items, use the same approach, but set the Left Indent to a value of twice the Tab Stops (every) setting, and the First Indent to approximately one and a half tab stop widths.

Bullet character tips:

You can insert a standard bullet character directly from your keyboard (using alt 8 on a US or UK keyboard).

You can use any character as a bullet.

Select bullet characters from the standard macOS Character Viewer, which you can open by choosing iStudio Publisher's menu option Edit > Emoji & Symbols (or choose Edit > Special Characters in some versions of OS X).

We plan to add new controls for creating bulleted and numbered lists to a future update.
