Zooming and Panning

There are a variety of zoom and pan controls available to change your viewing magnification (from 5% to 5000% continuously) and field of view.

Fast zooming and panning using your mouse:

To zoom smoothly, in or out of a document, hold down the Option key (marked 'alt' on some keyboards) and use your mouse scroll wheel. The zoom is centered on the mouse location.

To pan smoothly around a document, i.e. move your field of view in any direction, use Option-drag. This is generally quicker than using the scroll bars.

To zoom to the current shape selection (in or out), use Option-double click.

Four of the zoom controls on the status bar take effect immediately and will fill your window with views of the:

Zoom controls

The magnifying glass Zoom Tool remains selected until another tool selection is made. It applies a zoom in of fixed scale factor on every mouse click. Hold down the Shift key and click the mouse to zoom out. The zoom is centered on the mouse.

Click the disclosure arrows and select from a list of preset zoom values, or type a new zoom value into the value display field.
